Painting of Dr Guttmann in late middle age wearing a doctors white coat

Portrait of Professor Sir Ludwig Guttmann ©Eva Loeffler

The portrait of Dr Guttmann was given to him by the staff and friends at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. It was painted by the famous portrait artist, Sir James Gunn, several of his portraits can be seen at the National Portrait Gallery in London. This was the last portrait Sir James painted before he died and he hadn't quite finished the area below the right arm. Sir James’s daughter offered to finish the painting but Dr Guttmann said he wanted it left as it was. The original portrait is kept by Dr Guttmann's family and a copy of the painting is on display at Stoke Mandeville Stadium.
