1. Stoke Mandeville Games medal pouch, 1950

This leather pouch is one of many made by patients at the National Spinal Injuries Centre for holding the medals awarded to competitors in the early Stoke Mandeville Games.

2. Rome 1960 Paralympic Games medal

This was Britain’s first ever Paralympic gold medal. It was won by Margaret Maughan in the Women’s Columbia Round Open Archery event at the 1960 Paralympic Games in Rome, Italy, which is widely recognised as the first official Paralympic Games. 3. Romulus and Remus trophy, 1962

This Romulus and Remus trophy was a gift to Dr Ludwig Guttmann in recognition of his contribution to the Rome 1960 Paralympic Games from the organisers in Italy.

4. Tokyo 1964 Paralympic Games Geisha doll

This Geisha doll was presented as a gift to Caz Walton for winning the Women’s Wheelchair Dash at the Tokyo 1964 Games.

5. Tel Aviv 1968 Paralympic Games medal

This silver medal was awarded to John Watts in the men’s 100 metres freestyle open swimming event at the Tel Aviv 1968 Paralympic Games in Israel. The medal shows the wheelchair wheels logo and the then motto of the movement: Friendship, Unity and Sportsmanship. 1968 was also the twentieth anniversary of the founding of the state of Israel. 6. Arnhem 1980 Paralympic Games medal

Silver medal from the Arnhem 1980 Paralympic Games. At that time called the ‘Olympics for the Disabled Holland 1980’. This was awarded to Yvonne Matts who competed in bowls at the Arnhem 1980, Stoke Mandeville 1984 and Seoul 1988 Paralympic Games.
