A Sporting Chance: How Ludwig Guttmann Created the Paralympic Games is a new 115-page children’s chapter book, complete with photographs and full-colour illustrations, telling Ludwig Guttmann’s powerful story of persistence, hope, and inclusion.  

Lori was inspired to write Ludwig’s story after her young daughter, Nora, was diagnosed with pseudoarthrosis and the possible need for an amputation to her left tibia. In time, the family found surgery, rodding, and bracing were enough to stabilise the leg. They also found the Paralympic Games! 

We loved to watch the Games to show Nora that legs aren’t required for gold medals. Success comes to those who work for it.

Lori enjoyed researching Ludwig’s remarkable life, including his escape from Nazi Germany to his grass-roots effort to establish an athletic competition for his spinal injury patients. Illustrated by artist, Allan Drummond, A Sporting Chance received a starred review from Kirkus and is available now from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.
